Heartworm Preventative for your Dog
It is recommended that you test your dog for heartworm and have your dog on heartworm preventative monthly. Heartworm Disease can easily be prevented but difficult and costly to cure, and in some cases can be deadly. Heartworm is transmitted by the bite of an infected mosquito, and it only takes one mosquito infected with the heartworm larvae to infect your dog. There is no way to tell if the mosquito is infected, that is why the prevention of heartworm is very important. After a dog is bitten by an infected mosquito, it takes approximately seven months for the larvae to mature into adult heartworms. The heartworms then lodge in the heart, lungs and surrounding blood vessels and continue to reproduce. Adult heartworms can grow up to 12 inches in length and continue to multiply. Protect your pet and test your dog today at one of our clinics and start heartworm preventative.
